UN/EDIFACT D98B DESADV Message
Review the DESADV segment sequence, mandatory fields, repeat counts and valid codes for the D98B EDIFACT directory.
What the DESADV message is for
Despatch Advice Message. Sent when goods leave the supplier, describing exactly what is on the way and how it is packed. Widely known as an ASN.
DESADV lets a receiving site know what is arriving before it arrives, and in what physical arrangement. That advance notice is what makes goods-in scanning possible: if the despatch advice describes the pallets and cartons and carries the SSCC labels, a receiver can book in a delivery by scanning pallet labels instead of counting cartons. It is the message most retailers make mandatory first, because its absence forces manual checking on every inbound load, and errors found at the door are far cheaper than errors found in the invoice.
Who exchanges it
Sent by suppliers and third-party logistics providers, received by retailers, distributors and receiving warehouses. Follows ORDERS or a DELJIT call-off, precedes RECADV where the receiver confirms what actually arrived, and is matched against INVOIC at settlement.
Segments that carry the parts people get wrong
BGMDespatch advice number and function.DTMDespatch date and estimated delivery date.CPSConsignment packing sequence: the hierarchy that describes pallets containing cartons containing items.PACPackage types and counts at each level of that hierarchy.GINGoods identity numbers, carrying the SSCC pallet labels that goods-in scanning reads.LINLine items, and the quantities actually despatched rather than ordered.RFFThe purchase order reference the despatch relates to.
In practice: The packing hierarchy in CPS is where most implementations struggle. It must describe how the load is genuinely built, because the receiver scans against it; a structurally valid hierarchy that does not match the physical pallet is worse than no despatch advice at all.
