UN/EDIFACT D98A DELFOR Message

Review the DELFOR segment sequence, mandatory fields, repeat counts and valid codes for the D98A EDIFACT directory.

What the DELFOR message is for

Delivery Schedule Message. A rolling forecast of what a buyer expects to take, over weeks or months, so suppliers can plan production and materials.

DELFOR is the planning horizon of a scheduling relationship, used heavily in automotive and other manufacturing supply chains. Rather than issuing discrete purchase orders, the buyer publishes a schedule that is refreshed regularly, typically splitting the horizon into firm quantities that authorise production and forecast quantities that are planning guidance only. The supplier builds capacity and raw material plans against it. Each new DELFOR usually replaces the previous schedule outright rather than amending it.

Who exchanges it

Sent by buyers and manufacturers running scheduled procurement, received by component and material suppliers. Sets the medium-term horizon; DELJIT then calls off precise quantities against it. Shipments are announced with DESADV and settled with INVOIC.

Segments that carry the parts people get wrong

  • BGMSchedule identifier and message function, which signals replace or update.
  • DTMThe horizon dates and the schedule generation date.
  • LINThe item being scheduled.
  • QTYQuantities per bucket, distinguishing firm from forecast.
  • SCCScheduling conditions: the code that tells you whether a quantity authorises production or is merely planning.

In practice: The commercial risk sits in SCC. Reading a forecast bucket as a firm commitment leads to building stock nobody has agreed to buy, and the misreading is easy because the quantities look identical.
