UN/EDIFACT D99B IFTMIN Message

Review the IFTMIN segment sequence, mandatory fields, repeat counts and valid codes for the D99B EDIFACT directory.

What the IFTMIN message is for

Instruction Message. Instructs a carrier or forwarder to move a consignment, stating what, from where, to where and under what terms.

IFTMIN is the booking. It carries everything a transport provider needs to accept and plan a movement: the goods, the collection and delivery points, the dates, the service level, and any special handling such as temperature control or dangerous goods classification. Sending it electronically replaces emailed spreadsheets and phone bookings, and it gives both sides one agreed statement of what was requested, which matters when a dispute turns on whether a service level was ever asked for.

Who exchanges it

Sent by shippers, consignors and forwarders, received by carriers, hauliers and forwarding agents. Typically follows a DESADV describing the goods, and is tracked afterwards by IFTSTA. Consolidated movements are summarised in IFCSUM.

Segments that carry the parts people get wrong

  • BGMThe instruction reference and message function.
  • NADConsignor, consignee and any notify party.
  • LOCCollection and delivery locations.
  • DTMCollection and required delivery dates.
  • GIDGoods items with package counts.
  • MEAWeights and dimensions, which determine both vehicle capacity and price.
  • DGSDangerous goods classification, where applicable.

In practice: If DGS is populated, its accuracy is a legal matter rather than a data quality one. Carriers reject loads on classification mismatches, and rightly so.
