UN/EDIFACT D02A REMADV Message
Review the REMADV segment sequence, mandatory fields, repeat counts and valid codes for the D02A EDIFACT directory.
What the REMADV message is for
Remittance Advice Message. Tells a supplier which invoices a payment covers, and explains any deductions.
REMADV solves the allocation problem from the payer's side. A single payment often settles many invoices, sometimes with deductions for credit notes, agreed discounts or disputed lines, and a bank credit alone does not explain how the total was arrived at. The remittance advice itemises it, so the supplier's ledger can be cleared automatically and any deduction is visible with a reason attached. Without it, finance teams reverse-engineer payments by trial and error, which is where most aged debt disputes actually originate.
Who exchanges it
Sent by buyers and their accounts payable systems, received by suppliers and their accounts receivable systems. Accompanies payment instructed by PAYMUL or PAYORD, settling invoices raised by INVOIC. CREMUL carries the bank's view of the same credit.
Segments that carry the parts people get wrong
BGMRemittance advice number and function.DTMPayment date.NADPayer and payee.MOAThe total paid, and the amount allocated to each invoice.RFFThe invoice numbers being settled.AJTAdjustment reason, which explains any deduction.CUXCurrency.
In practice: AJT is what turns a short payment from a dispute into a bookkeeping entry. A remittance that deducts without a reason code will be queried, which removes most of the benefit of sending it.
