UN/EDIFACT D07B PRICAT Message

Review the PRICAT segment sequence, mandatory fields, repeat counts and valid codes for the D07B EDIFACT directory.

What the PRICAT message is for

Price/Sales Catalogue Message. The supplier's catalogue: which products exist, how they are identified, how they are packed and what they cost.

PRICAT is the message that makes the rest of the cycle possible, because it establishes the shared product identifiers that orders, despatch advices and invoices all rely on. A supplier sends it to publish new lines, price changes, pack changes and discontinuations. Where it is maintained properly, a buyer's system knows what a product code means before the first order is placed; where it is not, every order becomes a negotiation about what was actually meant, and price disputes surface at invoice matching instead.

Who exchanges it

Sent by suppliers, brand owners and distributors, received by retailers, wholesalers and marketplaces. Establishes the product and price data that ORDERS references and INVOIC is checked against. PRODAT carries richer product attributes where more detail is needed.

Segments that carry the parts people get wrong

  • BGMCatalogue identifier and function, distinguishing a full catalogue from an update.
  • DTMValidity dates, which determine when a price takes effect.
  • LINThe catalogue line, identifying the product by GTIN.
  • PIAAdditional product identifiers, such as the supplier's own code.
  • IMDItem description and characteristics.
  • PRIPrice, with the qualifier distinguishing gross from net.
  • CUXCurrency.
  • PACPack configuration: how many consumer units are in a case, and cases on a pallet.

In practice: Price validity dates in DTM cause more disputes than the prices themselves. A catalogue that changes a price without a clear effective date leaves buyer and supplier disagreeing about which price applied on the day the order was raised.
