Retail EDI and Shopify orders are not the same shape
A Shopify order comes from a shopper with an address and a payment. A retailer's EDI purchase order comes from a buying system with a depot, a delivery window, an agreed price and a pack configuration. Bringing the second into the first means deciding how demand that Shopify has no field for is represented.
Most suppliers land retailer orders as orders against a dedicated B2B or wholesale customer, keeping them separate from direct-to-consumer volume so fulfilment, pricing and reporting do not blur together.
Variants, packs and the thing Shopify does not model
Shopify identifies products by variant and SKU. Retailers identify them by GTIN at each packaging level, and order in the level they buy. A retailer ordering a case of twelve against a variant priced as a single is the most common source of wrong invoices in a Shopify programme.
Shopify also has no native packaging hierarchy, so despatch advice detail down to carton and pallet is assembled in the integration from fulfilment data rather than read out of Shopify.
